I was having a chat with my cousin Stuart about Instagram a few weeks back and how it’s so difficult to gain followers, when he said that the accounts that usually do well are full of provocative and sexualised shots (now I don’t mean full on nudity, but “sexy” shots). So why do you have to get your arse out to gain more followers? As we all know, actual nudity is prohibited by Instagram and their AI will remove any images they deem to be inappropriate before it even gets to upload or has been reported as inappropriate – so lets clarify what kind of content we’re talking about. Bikini and swimwear shots, super tight/short… anything, smouldering eyes, pouts – you get where I’m going with this. But why are these some of the most successful accounts?
I know it’s not always the case, but think about the accounts you come across that have this kind of aesthetic in comparison to a pretty PG one – the engagement is insane and the followers seem to be rolling up like there’s no tomorrow. The true fact of the matter is, sex sells!
Using sexualised images objectifying women historically has been a way for women to help marketers sell their products – however, the objectification has moved on from women being a “good housewife” to a “strong independent woman” which could make women feel inferior for not having the banging bod of the Victoria’s Secret model (I sure as shit do) – but why do we need to pout, squat, smoulder (or squint lol) to grab the attention of our audience? Is it necessary for me to pop my bum in side shots, tilt my leg ever so slightly and wear weather inappropriate clothing to get some more followers? I’m sick of feeling like shit because I can’t grow in the way I want to and I’m not willing to get my arse out for a few more followers.
I’ve spoken about my issues with Instagram a lot in the past, my last one being here (it turns out my issues with Instagram themselves haven’t trickled into 2019 until now), so my long time readers may be rolling their eyes or not have even gotten this far – here goes the Gaby pity party – but this kind of content being broadcasted across the internet makes girls like me, who just want to write and share funny stories that make everyone feel that little bit better, like dog shit because we don’t live that lavish life.
We can’t afford to poke and prod our bodies to eventually become the carbon copy of that girl you used to rip the shit out of for having the ridiculous lips, which turned into the ridiculous filler and eventually the tits, belly, arse – it’s a never ending cycle and we’ve become hardwired to deem this kind of content desirable.
So my question to you all is, what makes you like a picture or follow an account? Do you consciously like or is it a knee-jerk reaction? Do you follow people you admire, or aspire to be? I’d love to know your thoughts, so let me know in the comments below.
