The Fashion Faux Pas of Gabrielle An unconventional fashion blogger trying to find her place on the internet

A confession about my photos

04/03/2019

I’ve made it no secret that I live in a council flat (well housing association if you want to get technical) on a council estate. I’m not one of these girls, nor will I ever be, that dresses up and heads to the outside of an aspirational home for a photo shoot. I’m not going to lie to you all and pretend that that’s my life, because it’s not (nor will it ever be). So my confession for today about my photos is that 99% of the ones I share on my feed (Instagram and on here) have in fact, been taken on a council estate, outside my council flat and that doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.

Are these types of photos detrimental to my Instagram following? Quite likely, however it’s also probably because I don’t get my body out.

I’ve been rocking this area outside my flat for the past 3 years and love it. I look outside of my window and sometimes see the beautiful blossom on the trees, sometimes there’s rubbish floating around that the bin men dropped (because let’s face it, they’re shit), or on rare occasions someone has decided to fly-tip their dirty old sofa next to the garages I look out on.

Look closely and you might spot a crisp packet floating in the wind, a stray brick (the source of which is to this day unknown) or the concrete from a pillar that has been sat next to the lamp post for years after someone pulled it up and never went back to take it away (pretty sure you’ll notice it now I’ve said).

When did a blogger sharing real life photos become so taboo? Why are we flocking to take shopping and life advice from people that haven’t, nor will they ever have to live in a place like this? I’m not saying I live in a shit hole, I mean as far as council estates go I’m quite lucky in that I’m not living near a park or the shops – but nonetheless it’s a council estate. We have nice people that go to church (our neighbour in the houses was the organ player at our wedding), we have some not nice scummy people that let their kids run riot while they puff on their 40 fags (and funny fags) a day and we have your everyday people just working their way to get a nice house to start a family one day.

Let’s not pretend that the article published in the Times and the Evening Standard about the residents of Notting Hill becoming irritated by the masses of influencers posing on their doorsteps hasn’t been a trigger for today’s post. A quick Google or Twitter search will show the huge backlash from both sides of an argument about whether or not this kind of content is fair to the audience and how it can impact the people living in the areas people are shooting in. Some of these houses are worth upwards of £1 million and are beautiful so I understand the attraction. I know I’d personally find it annoying if I walked out of my front door to people having photo shoots, I get pissed off at having to trample through the mass of fallen soggy leaves, let alone cameras and fashionistas (oh how the other half live).

Having said that, I don’t think they’re doing any harm, but I think it sparks a debate about whether we as a community need to become a bit more original and creative in what we produce – it’s all well and good posing for the odd snap if you happen to be in the area, but do you want your photo to become lost in the sea of the people doing the same thing?

Anyway, that’s my 2p’s worth on the subject and I’ve made my confession about my photos being taken on a council estate. It’s not glamorous, but that’s the life I live and I’m not ever going to pretend that it isn’t.

I for sure would find people constantly taking photos outside of my house annoying but like you, I wouldn’t find it threatening or harmful in any way! I have taken photos in my area before for my blog and Instagram but I don’t anymore because I like my background to be quite interesting and colourful to showcase the content I create whereas my area is quite dull! I have taken photos outside of rusty old garages because I thought it looked quite punky 😂 To be honest, my content isn’t showcasing up-market things anyway so I’m not in need of selling a life I don’t live, I just like venturing out and trying different locations hehe. I like that I have my own style and I love that you do, too!

Ahh you always have lovely natural backgrounds in your photos which I love! There’s one of you in some kind of woods which I thought was absolutely stunning – you’re mixing it up though and that’s exactly what I think we all need to do! I really like the greenery outside of mine, but I wouldn’t change that to fit in with what everyone else is doing. You keep doing you – you’re bloody fab 😘😘❤️❤️

Personally I absolutely love your photos, they’re always really fun and natural which is what I love! I honestly find that so much more relatable than super staged photos, not that there’s anything wrong with those but in terms of fashion I’m just a regular gal, haha. I love that yours are outdoors as it always fits with the seasons and pairs along great with your outfits all year round. Who cares if you’re on a council estate or not?! You still look AMAZING all the time. Also LOVE that red shirt.

Great point about people who are not showing their real lives! Authenticity comes directly from being yourself and usually shows through! I take pictures in the strangest of places sometimes and thats what makes them cool!!
Anyway- I love your blog it comes off as very authentic and fun!

We’re now in the process of fixing it up and getting our bedroom ready to move in to, so hope we can get in next week! I’m going to be sharing the whole process on our Tiktok account which you can follow @thealbonrenovation - the first post on there is just a video showing the whole house as it was when we bought it on Friday (it’s changed a lot since then!) - so give us a follow it you love a bit of home renovation! 🥳🥳 #firsttimebuyers #newhouse
When the snow was beautiful and didn’t disappear When the snow was beautiful and didn’t disappear ❄️ what a week it’s been! I’ve been shivering away, heating on full blast and my dressing gown wrapped around me as I work this week - I love the look of snow but hate the cold! Had a day of hypochondria where I had a cough and was convinced it was Covid - but turns out my husband knows me best and that it wasn’t. And that’s probably the most exciting bit of news I l have for you all! How are you all doing?!
Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time between posts as I have been in the last few months, so I think a couple of weeks is an improvement! On our way home from food shopping last week (highlight of the week!) we decided to stop by one of my favourite spots to take some outfit photos, where the majority of what I’m wearing is second hand (bag, jacket and jumper). I’m getting extremely stir crazy, but at the same time have turned into quite the hermit, I miss going out for lunch with Aaron, mooching around the charity shops and going out to do site visits for work - let’s hope this vaccine helps bring some normality!
And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to make myself feel like I was going somewhere tonight by putting a full face of makeup on, with the intention of sitting on the sofa sharing a bottle of Disaronno with Aaron to see the new year in! We might hit up the kitchen, the living room and Aaron suggested the bathroom but I wasn’t sure 😂 what have you got planned for tonight? And Happy New Year to everyone!
And that’s Christmas over for another year (alth And that’s Christmas over for another year (although let’s be honest, 2020 may as well not have happened!) and I just hope to god 2021 is a damn site better for everyone! Since I’ve been attempting to cut out purchasing brand new clothing all together, bar a few items such as underwear and pyjamas, I’m hoping once Hertfordshire is out of Tier 4 that I can head to the shops and do some serious secondhand shopping and use the vouchers I got to buy myself some new beauty bits. How was your quiet Christmas and have you got any beauty recommendations for me? #hertsbloggers #fashionbloggeruk #ukfashionblogger #ukstyleblogger #hertsbloggerlove #sustainablefashionblogger #secondhandfashionblogger #petitebloggeruk #petitefashionbloggeruk #outfitinspo #mylookoftheday #ootdshare #ukfashionblog #petitestyle #hertfordshirebloggers #funkyfashion #ukfashion #ootdinspo #canon700d #canon #amatuerphotography #aspiringfashionblogger #aspiringblogger
