Much like beauty, fashion is in the eye of the beholder and what I deem as a “faux pas” might not be to someone else. I wanted to make that clear before proceeding with the rest of this post – you know how everyone gets offended about everything these days, you can’t be too careful 😉.
I’ve been running this blog for coming on three years and talking about my fashion faux pas’ past and present. In a moment of reflection, I thought back to why I started it all and what it meant to me now in comparison to a 23-year-old Gaby, she wasn’t as clued up on this blogging and fashion game as I am.
Wasn’t she a doll with eyebrows so far apart?! For me – that’s a faux pas.
A fashion faux pas is an oversight of an extremely obvious error in the styling of an outfit; whether that’s a choice in trend, an over/undersized garment that doesn’t look the way you intended it to, a badly made piece of clothing or just an utterly shit outfit.
In the name of looking back, I’ve put together some of my favourite/funniest fashion faux pas’ for your amusement, along with some commentary of course – it wouldn’t be a blog without some words in between now would it 😉?!
Probably better suited for a day of lounging around at home, this oversized Love Island slogan tee doesn’t make this outfit a favourite combo of mine. Maybe it was because I was feeling a bit shitty that day and couldn’t seem to capture a good picture, but let’s all agree this isn’t my greatest outfit.
There wasn’t anything wrong with this outfit combo, but I could have done with a belt to get rid of the “newly pregnant” belly look I’ve got going on here. Aaron and I got back to the hotel room after this picture was taken in Bali and were belly laughing at my belly 😂
A big part of writing this blog has been reviewing some of the discount fashion shops you see plastered all over your newsfeed when scrolling through Facebook. Sometimes there are wins and sometimes there are fails, these leggings being one of the latter. I obviously returned these (along with the additional pair I accidentally ordered) when I realised they were a faux pas.
Sorry for the pixelated snap, but this is the only photographic evidence I could find of these bad boys. I picked these up on eBay about 5/6 years ago when I was heading up to Birmingham for a weekend and thought they were PERFECT (so perfect that I left them in a taxi on the way back to the hotel 😂) – in hindsight, they were poorly made, virtually hollow and not that nice. But 20 year old Gaby was thinking GLITTER 😍
Another classic throwback to my uni days, this was a mixture of everything that was trendy back in 2010/11 – thick waist belt – check, big flower headband – check, bodycon flower print skirt – check. Basically a timewarp back to when I first began studying fashion and didn’t know any better. Thank you University of Hertfordshire for teaching me well, despite the odd hiccup.
The last two are throwbacks to one of my first blog posts (good lighting wasn’t something I fully understood when taking blog pictures back then) and sparked up the idea of the whole concept of this blog, first up is this floral kimono with crochet and tassles – so much going on and it wasn’t well constructed. Suffice to say, after one holiday it went in the bin.
The final one was a dress I’d picked up in the River Island sale a few years back. It would have been perfect on someone that was a foot taller than me that was straight up and down, but not on me. It made me feel frumpy, short and just not that fabulous!
And there we have it, a round up of my favourite fashion faux pas’ from over the years and what a fashion faux pas means to me. Let me know whether you can relate to any of my past failures and if you’ve got some stories to share of your own!

Gaby that first pic of you is GORGEOUS. I mean, the brows could’ve been better but I don’t think they’re bad at all!? And your hair looks incredible! Those leggings with the check panels are pretty horrendous I’m not going to lie! And the pic where it looks like you have a belly is so odd, you’re so teeny!! I think one of my worst fashion faux pas was when I used to straighten my hair til it was dead. Like it was poker straight to the point that the ends used to start flicking OUTwards. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking, I don’t even use any heat appliances on my hair nowadays! Another is electric blue jeans… Back in my emo days they were all the range!

You’re hilarious Alice and I love that you’re honest with me 😂😂 and I was all about that poker straight, crispy and frazzled blonde hair too!! I keep heat appliances to a minimum with my hair now – I can’t go back to a life where broken hair was the norm for me 😂 ❤️❤️
I love how you don’t take yourself seriously – life is too short!! I think I would cringe way too hard if I brought out all of my fashion faux pas.. We all make them at least a few times in our life! Fashion is always changing and evolving and it’s hard to keep up with haha xo

Ahh thanks – it’s the main reason I started my blog 😂😂 and you’re so right, we’ll look back in 20 years on what we’ve been wearing and wonder what on Earth 😂❤️
I agree with Alice, you look gorgeous in that first photo Gabs! Some hilarious photos in here, I like looking back, just proves how far you’ve come with your blog!
Ahh thanks lovely! And looking back is one of my favourite things to do, it always makes me laugh and realise how much I’ve learnt 😂❤️
Your posts actually crack me up. I feel like having a scroll through some old pictures at my awful choice in clothes haha
It’s an eye opening experience that I definitely recommend 😂 glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
