I’ve got a quick post for you lovely little ladies out there that struggle with finding a way to make a maxi dress work for them when you can’t find the same one in a petite range. I love a maxi dress, but spent so long avoiding them as I thought I’d look shorter than I already am. Well, I’m here to tell you I was wrong!
Yes, I could always chop off the excess fabric and take it up (I do it for loads of other people after all), but when it comes to my own clothes – quite frankly I can’t be bothered to get my sewing machine out and will avoid it as much as possible.
But if you find the right kind of style – there’s no need to get the scissors out! All you need is a strapless bra and a maxi dress with an elasticated waist.
I picked up this gorgeous maxi dress from New Look the other day which inspired this post – it was in the sale and an absolute bargain at just £12!
After putting it on and trying to mark where I was going to take it up, I stood in front of the mirror and starting folding, tucking and adjusting (because getting my sewing machine out again after a day of sewing the day before didn’t appeal) – before I knew it, I had it looking great and I didn’t fall over when I walked!
It’s VERY easy and I took a few snaps to show you how I did it.
Stretch out the waist and turn the bottom upwards until the hem sits where you need it to;
Once you’ve figured out how much you need to take up, pull your bra out and tuck the excess fabric underneath;
Make sure to do the same around the back!
Pull the gathered fabric around a bit so the top section overlaps where you’ve tucked it under and you’re done!
I told you it was a quick one! Not only have I taken it up, I’ve also accentuated my small boobs, giving an illusion I’ve got a pretty decent rack – not bad eh?!

This is such a fab hack Gaby! Maxi dresses are always way too long for me (I’m only 5ft..) so I give my good old Nannie a shout and she takes them all up for me! Love this maxi dress on you, it’s gorgeous xo

Well, I never really felt tall being 5ft2 (and a half 😂) but I do now! Ahhh bless your Nannie taking them up for you! And thank you lovely! ❤️❤️
This is a potentially life-saving hack, I absolutely hate when I fall in love with a dress but they don’t have a petite version! I’m going to have to buy myself a new dress now so that I can test it out 😉 I love the dress as well, the colour looks gorgeous on you! x

Ahh thanks lovely! And yeah, saved me loads of time sitting in front of my sewing machine lol! Xx
Okay the last bit made me laugh out loud “giving an illusion I’ve got a pretty decent rack” 😂 you’re the best! This is such a fab idea and despite being a fellow short lady I’d never though of this! I stay away from maxi dresses too and jumpsuits as I end up looking like slenderman or something in them. I wonder if the same thing would work?! I suppose it’d depend on the measurements and your body really! Absolutely adore the dress too and what a bargain!

Give it a go!! I think you’d deffo look fab in a maxi with some chunky boots and leather jacket 👌🏻 and lol, I actually laughed when I wrote it, so I’m glad it made someone chuckle 😂😂 xxx
Ahh you bloody lifesaver!! I’ve always struggled with maxi dresses, now I don’t have to, yaaay
Ahh good, deffo give it a go and if you’re in the dressing room trying it on it’s a lifesaver as it gives you an idea if you actually want to go through the hassle of getting it taken up! ❤️❤️
