The Fashion Faux Pas of Gabrielle An unconventional fashion blogger trying to find her place on the internet

Life

Being original in a world full of unoriginality

09/04/2018

Is anyone truly individual in life? Among the however billion people on the planet (I didn’t Google it, but pretty sure it’s in the billions), surely there’s bound to be someone else that is a carbon copy of yourself and you just don’t know about it?

I never really gave this much thought until I started blogging and more so in recent months when we’re hearing a lot more about the same old bloggers getting the same old opportunities because they “fit” into an unspoken, but very visible criteria. You need to be conventionally good looking, have the right figure, the right skin colour, the right kind of background and be of a specific social class (just to name a few). And quite frankly, I’m a little bit bored of it.

When did everyone become a carbon copy of each other when it comes to blogging, style, make up, hair and lifestyle? Why do we all feel the need to only showcase the good and not the bad? Wasn’t that the original beauty of blogging? We could rely on blogs to be a sacred place where we trusted that the opinion or experience being shared was genuine and real?

When we read our favourite blogs, are the opinions and thoughts true to the writer, or are they just saying what they think they should to pull in their audience, not remaining true to themselves and being unoriginal.
There’s always going to be someone out there that has a very similar outlook on life, a similar sense of humour, maybe even look similar to you, but that shouldn’t equate to the majority of fashion, beauty and lifestyle bloggers being carbon copies of each other.

This got me thinking about my own blog and originality of it.
Am I original? I know I censor myself a lot on social media, purely for the fact that I don’t want the bother of broadcasting certain opinions and having a backlash on controversial topics, but does that make me unoriginal?! Is my Instagram feed unique to me? Is my writing style truly reflective of me?
Although I know everything is truly my own opinion and a reflection of me, I often find myself reverting back to older posts to make sure it’s coming across in the way I want it to. I don’t want to follow the crowd (despite how that might be detrimental to my growth) and would rather spend my time writing about everything I love or loath – because if I didn’t do that, I wouldn’t be me.
But why are so many bloggers succumbing to the mainstream way of doing things, rather than remaining original? I’m sure there are many thoughts and opinions on this, but my personal view is that people think they need to follow the crowd to make it big. So many girls want to be the “next Zoella” that they’ll do anything they can to get there.
One thing I like to think about when I’m running out of creative juice is why I started my blog in the first place. I wanted to write about fashion, make people laugh and relate to my mishaps – I wanted to share real life stories, reviews, opinions and advice based on my own experience. It’s grown since the early days, but I’m pretty sure the original premise has remained the same.
So there’s my 2p’s worth on originality – I like to do a post like this every once in a while, it helps me to stay grounded 😉

I could never be anything aside from myself – of course we censor a few things like bad language and maybe a few opinion’s that we’ll probably receive hate for, but I couldn’t keep up an act of not being myself! Fab post 🙂 xo

Honestly I am soo bored of it too. I’m so bored of the Instagrams that show no faces, just products and flowers laid out pretty with 27k followers. I’m so bored of seeing the same boring t-shirt from the same brand that everyone has only bought because so and so has it. I’m so bored of the gift guide posts that suggest you can only buy your boyfriend a mini speaker, some aftershave or some CK underwear for his birthday. I feel ya Gaby and I bloody love your posts like this! I’m nothing but me in every area and aspect of my life, even on the internet! I think I’d implode trying to be someone I’m not…

I completely feel you on this. It’s so hard not to conform and blog about what is current and ‘hyped’ in the blogosphere.
More recently iv’e decided to start up film blogging again as its something i adore but have put off for ages as i was worried it wouldn’t go with my aesthetic and categories. So silly!
    Great post Gabs! xx

I’ve always wanted to know if there was someone somewhere in the world that looked like me (poor fucker) but you’re right, there’s a lot of samey samey in the blogging community which drives me crazy but I also feel the pressure to fit in that “blogger cliche” category

To be honest some of the things that everyone does or wears are super cute and maybe everyone just has similar tastes. But there is so much that people just do/wear because everyone else is doing it and as soon as the trend has stopped no one else does it again and it is because they don’t actually like it. It’d be lovely to see a bit more originality in the blogging world, hopefully one day..

I hope so too Lily, I get that there will be a lot of people that like the same trends, but deffo see through a lot of people that go wherever the trend winds blow which is a shame! ❤️

I completely agree with everything you’ve said in this post, everything just seems so same-y for the majority and I’m so bored of it. It’s like all the blog girls having pictures outside Peggy Porschen, what makes people think everyone just wants to see the same thing?! I think you and your blog are a prime example of staying true and full of originality, and it’s something I really look up to x

When the snow was beautiful and didn’t disappear When the snow was beautiful and didn’t disappear ❄️ what a week it’s been! I’ve been shivering away, heating on full blast and my dressing gown wrapped around me as I work this week - I love the look of snow but hate the cold! Had a day of hypochondria where I had a cough and was convinced it was Covid - but turns out my husband knows me best and that it wasn’t. And that’s probably the most exciting bit of news I l have for you all! How are you all doing?!
Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time between posts as I have been in the last few months, so I think a couple of weeks is an improvement! On our way home from food shopping last week (highlight of the week!) we decided to stop by one of my favourite spots to take some outfit photos, where the majority of what I’m wearing is second hand (bag, jacket and jumper). I’m getting extremely stir crazy, but at the same time have turned into quite the hermit, I miss going out for lunch with Aaron, mooching around the charity shops and going out to do site visits for work - let’s hope this vaccine helps bring some normality!
And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to make myself feel like I was going somewhere tonight by putting a full face of makeup on, with the intention of sitting on the sofa sharing a bottle of Disaronno with Aaron to see the new year in! We might hit up the kitchen, the living room and Aaron suggested the bathroom but I wasn’t sure 😂 what have you got planned for tonight? And Happy New Year to everyone!
And that’s Christmas over for another year (alth And that’s Christmas over for another year (although let’s be honest, 2020 may as well not have happened!) and I just hope to god 2021 is a damn site better for everyone! Since I’ve been attempting to cut out purchasing brand new clothing all together, bar a few items such as underwear and pyjamas, I’m hoping once Hertfordshire is out of Tier 4 that I can head to the shops and do some serious secondhand shopping and use the vouchers I got to buy myself some new beauty bits. How was your quiet Christmas and have you got any beauty recommendations for me? #hertsbloggers #fashionbloggeruk #ukfashionblogger #ukstyleblogger #hertsbloggerlove #sustainablefashionblogger #secondhandfashionblogger #petitebloggeruk #petitefashionbloggeruk #outfitinspo #mylookoftheday #ootdshare #ukfashionblog #petitestyle #hertfordshirebloggers #funkyfashion #ukfashion #ootdinspo #canon700d #canon #amatuerphotography #aspiringfashionblogger #aspiringblogger
Hello strangers! Thought I should pop on here and Hello strangers! Thought I should pop on here and let you all know I haven’t forgotten about this online world, I’ve just needed some time to myself after almost 5 years of continuous life sharing! I also haven’t been heading off anywhere glam or buying much to share on here, so today’s snap is a bit of a throw back to just before the first lockdown when I found this gorgeous wool blazer in @british_heart_foundation from @poloralphlauren 🥰 how are you all and have you managed to find any bargain secondhand finds?! ♻️🌿
I’ll be honest and say that I’ve completely go I’ll be honest and say that I’ve completely gone off of Instagram over the last few months and popped on here this morning for the first time in weeks to see if I could get back into the swing again. To be honest I’ve been so busy with work most days, that when it comes to having some free time all I want to do is slob out, watch something on the telly and do nothing - I spend most of my life on my laptop or work phone, that the last thing I want to do when I’m finished is churn out more content. But I’ve come to realise that’s okay - I don’t need to let my social media dictate how I live my life, or feel bad about the fact that I don’t have certain things, can’t go certain places or live a certain life - because social media (and especially Instagram), is where people showcase their best selves and not necessarily what’s going on off screen. I realised a while ago that jealousy isn’t going to get me anywhere; I might look at someone online and envy their life, but should be thankful (and am!) for the life that I’ve already got - there’s always going to be someone worse off and everyone has different goals or ideals in life, so there’s no use in getting bogged down when I can’t afford to go certain places, have certain things, when I’ll get where I need to be in my own time. I just need to carry on doing my own thing and not let the Instagram envy get me down ❤️
{GIFTED} Thank you so much to @kaolin.kiln for sen {GIFTED} Thank you so much to @kaolin.kiln for sending me these gorgeous earrings from her Etsy store - everything is zero waste and all packaging is 100% recyclable! I hope you’re all enjoying the gorgeous sunshine and making sure your skin is well protected from the sun - you don’t want to end up tossing and turning because you got burnt and turned into a radiator in a day! We went food shopping and out to the in-laws for our weekly Sunday roast, so I’m now spending the afternoon keeping as cool as I can in the flat, readying myself for another week of work in the heat!
