The Fashion Faux Pas of Gabrielle An unconventional fashion blogger trying to find her place on the internet

Life

A True Inspiration

20/04/2018

I’ve found that there are a select few people you meet in your life that have such a huge impact on the person you become and I wanted to talk about a woman that helped me realise fashion was the world I wanted to be a part of.
This phenomenal woman’s name is Julia Fleminger and was one of my tutors from North Hertfordshire College. She taught me fine art for two years when I was studying for my BTEC National Diploma and encouraged me to apply and enrol for the Foundation Degree Fashion & Textiles course that she was course leader for when I was coming towards the time for applying to universities.
She was one of the quirkiest, poshest and funniest ladies I had ever met – she had such a passion for creating beautiful art, textiles and fashion that was intoxicating.
I met her when I was just sixteen years old on one of my first days of college after leaving school, we were sat in the textiles room when she announced “UP EVERYONE – WE’RE GOING OUT!” So everybody stumbled around, gathering their sketchbooks, pencils, charcoal or whatever their medium of choice was, following her out of the door into the meadows across the road from our college. We ended up sitting in a field full of cows, sketching everything around us as she encouraged everyone to express what they saw.
I knew I liked this lady after that day and that she’d be a huge influence on me personally.

In the next two years, she taught us all about screen-printing, life drawing (I’ll never forget the old naked man with a tattoo of a butterfly on his arse and a piercing through his cock, giggling away) amongst the various other weird and wonderful things, whilst we all figured out what we wanted to do with our lives.
September of 2010 soon rolled around and I was sat back in that same textiles studio where I’d been on my first day of college two years before, freshly bronzed from my first holiday with Aaron to Turkey and listening to this fabulous woman talk about what the Foundation Degree Fashion & Textiles course entailed.
The two years that followed were full of laughter, tears and creativity. We went to so many exhibitions, museums, exhibited at the NEC Clothes Show Live, travelled around Paris and made some amazing friends for life.

Julia saw something in me and really encouraged me to join that course – I couldn’t imagine where I’d be today if I hadn’t taken her advice and jumped into it head first. I’d always been creative and had forgotten that as a child I always wanted to be a fashion designer – she probed my memories (unknowingly to her) and helped me recall my dream. For that I’ll forever be grateful to her.

After thirty-nine years of teaching, I got a message on Facebook a couple of weeks back to say that Julia was leaving the college and there was a surprise leaving do being held at a pub in the town that I work in. I knew I had to pop in and catch up – it had been six years since I’d bid farewell and moved onto to top up my foundation degree into a Batchelor’s, I wanted to see Julia and all of my friends that I’d not seen in years.

When I walked in the door with Aaron, her face lit up and I loved that she remembered every single person that walked in that door. Her hair was exactly the same, she hadn’t aged and was still her bubbly, outgoing self. She remembered Aaron, asked how his mum was doing (she used to work at the college too) and was so excited that we’re getting married! Although, she couldn’t believe I wasn’t keeping my name 😂.
I wanted to write this post to praise and thank an amazing lady (who is completely against anything social media related, so I’ll be emailing her the link to this post – she never changes 😂) and let her know how much of an impact she had on my life. Yes, I might not be working directly in fashion, but I made my own opportunity through this blog and I can’t imagine where I’d be without it.
Let me know if you’ve met someone in your life that’s changed it for the better in the comments below.

Aww Gaby you have such a way with words, I have no idea who this woman is but the clear admiration you have for her made me well up! I had this with a music teacher in college and I grew so much within myself and my passion in the two years he taught me. It really is incredible how much you can develop and thrive with the right inspiration and support. I’m so glad you found your passion and I’m so glad you started this blog otherwise I wouldn’t know of you!

This is such a lovely and thoughtful post, I really hope Julia gets to read it! This is honestly one of my goals in life, to be such a huge point of inspiration for someone. I love when you can really connect with a teacher, I feel like you learn so much more when that happens! x

Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time Hello all! I’m trying not to leave too much time between posts as I have been in the last few months, so I think a couple of weeks is an improvement! On our way home from food shopping last week (highlight of the week!) we decided to stop by one of my favourite spots to take some outfit photos, where the majority of what I’m wearing is second hand (bag, jacket and jumper). I’m getting extremely stir crazy, but at the same time have turned into quite the hermit, I miss going out for lunch with Aaron, mooching around the charity shops and going out to do site visits for work - let’s hope this vaccine helps bring some normality!
And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to And the final day of 2020 is upon us! I decided to make myself feel like I was going somewhere tonight by putting a full face of makeup on, with the intention of sitting on the sofa sharing a bottle of Disaronno with Aaron to see the new year in! We might hit up the kitchen, the living room and Aaron suggested the bathroom but I wasn’t sure 😂 what have you got planned for tonight? And Happy New Year to everyone!
And that’s Christmas over for another year (alth And that’s Christmas over for another year (although let’s be honest, 2020 may as well not have happened!) and I just hope to god 2021 is a damn site better for everyone! Since I’ve been attempting to cut out purchasing brand new clothing all together, bar a few items such as underwear and pyjamas, I’m hoping once Hertfordshire is out of Tier 4 that I can head to the shops and do some serious secondhand shopping and use the vouchers I got to buy myself some new beauty bits. How was your quiet Christmas and have you got any beauty recommendations for me? #hertsbloggers #fashionbloggeruk #ukfashionblogger #ukstyleblogger #hertsbloggerlove #sustainablefashionblogger #secondhandfashionblogger #petitebloggeruk #petitefashionbloggeruk #outfitinspo #mylookoftheday #ootdshare #ukfashionblog #petitestyle #hertfordshirebloggers #funkyfashion #ukfashion #ootdinspo #canon700d #canon #amatuerphotography #aspiringfashionblogger #aspiringblogger
Hello strangers! Thought I should pop on here and Hello strangers! Thought I should pop on here and let you all know I haven’t forgotten about this online world, I’ve just needed some time to myself after almost 5 years of continuous life sharing! I also haven’t been heading off anywhere glam or buying much to share on here, so today’s snap is a bit of a throw back to just before the first lockdown when I found this gorgeous wool blazer in @british_heart_foundation from @poloralphlauren 🥰 how are you all and have you managed to find any bargain secondhand finds?! ♻️🌿
I’ll be honest and say that I’ve completely go I’ll be honest and say that I’ve completely gone off of Instagram over the last few months and popped on here this morning for the first time in weeks to see if I could get back into the swing again. To be honest I’ve been so busy with work most days, that when it comes to having some free time all I want to do is slob out, watch something on the telly and do nothing - I spend most of my life on my laptop or work phone, that the last thing I want to do when I’m finished is churn out more content. But I’ve come to realise that’s okay - I don’t need to let my social media dictate how I live my life, or feel bad about the fact that I don’t have certain things, can’t go certain places or live a certain life - because social media (and especially Instagram), is where people showcase their best selves and not necessarily what’s going on off screen. I realised a while ago that jealousy isn’t going to get me anywhere; I might look at someone online and envy their life, but should be thankful (and am!) for the life that I’ve already got - there’s always going to be someone worse off and everyone has different goals or ideals in life, so there’s no use in getting bogged down when I can’t afford to go certain places, have certain things, when I’ll get where I need to be in my own time. I just need to carry on doing my own thing and not let the Instagram envy get me down ❤️
{GIFTED} Thank you so much to @kaolin.kiln for sen {GIFTED} Thank you so much to @kaolin.kiln for sending me these gorgeous earrings from her Etsy store - everything is zero waste and all packaging is 100% recyclable! I hope you’re all enjoying the gorgeous sunshine and making sure your skin is well protected from the sun - you don’t want to end up tossing and turning because you got burnt and turned into a radiator in a day! We went food shopping and out to the in-laws for our weekly Sunday roast, so I’m now spending the afternoon keeping as cool as I can in the flat, readying myself for another week of work in the heat!

I’ve spent most of the weekend holed up at home, sweating my tits off and binge watching Empire, but it was nice to leave the flat to do some food shopping and have a Sunday roast with the in-laws! On the way home we stopped at a field near home to take some photos for today’s post and it was fun to try out a new location, rocking my #secondhanddress I picked up from @scopecharity last weekend!
