[…] few months. I’ve been adding to this post over the last few weeks to provide an update on my Upping my Skincare Routine post I did a while back, so you can see for yourselves what kind of impact my new routine has had […]

If you’ve been a reader of mine for a while, you’ll know that I’ve spent the last few months struggling with adult acne after going through quite a stressful time in my life with health (make sure to check out my post about coping with adult acne here). However with our wedding coming up shortly and the worst of it (which seems to be) behind me, I’m now having to figure out what I can do about the scarring left over from it. I’ve been doing some research, looking at/watching other blogger’s recommendations (because they’re the ones that matter!) and looking at what I’ve historically done to figure out a routine that will work best for me. I’ve been known to be very lazy when it comes to skin care, so me committing to this is a huge deal!
What I’ll be using
A while back I did a review on the app Cute (check it out here if you haven’t seen it already) and I bought a Derma Roller which is supposed to help with correcting your skin in multiple ways (women use them for fine lines or scarring predominantly) – but until last weekend I hadn’t made use of it.
Derma Rollers are covered in tiny needles which you roll over the problem areas of your skin, the idea is that the small amount of damage from the needles will cause the skin to repair itself deeper than the surface – it’s also supposed to become more absorbent to products you put on immediately after.
After I’d found out how they work, I chose the products I was going to use in line with it – hyper-pigmentation was an issue for me so I decided on trying the serum from The Ordinary – Alpha Albutrin 2% which is specifically for that and hoped it would start to help with the scarring I’ve got left over.
To make sure that I’m keeping on top of future break-outs, I decided to give the L’Oréal Pure Clay Blemish Rescue mask a go and will be using it once a week -maybe more depending on how my skin plays ball! I’m going to continue using my Simple Replenishing Moisturiser daily (upping it to twice a day from my usual once). And because I’m never going to be able to get myself into a routine of washing my face twice a day, I’m going to be using the L’Oréal Fine Flowers Gel Cream Wash in the evenings.
My new routine
Morning
- Cleanse and tone my skin with the Nivea Cleanser and Toner using a cotton pad
- Massage The Ordinary Alpha Albutrin 2% serum all over my face
- Moisturise using Simple Replenishing Moisturiser
- Once that’s settled into my skin (usually in the time it takes for me to drink my morning tea) I’ll continue with my morning makeup routine
Evening
- Wash my face using the L’Oréal Fine Flowers Gel Cream Wash
- Remove any excess makeup using my Nivea Cleanser and Toner
- Roll the Derma Roller over the scarring on my cheeks and chin
- Massage the Alpha Albutrin 2% serum into my entire face
- Moisturise using the Simple Replenishing Moisturiser again
I’ve decided I’m going to only use the Derma Roller every other day to give my skin a break – I don’t want to over do it right now, so will see how I get on before I change it up.
What my skin currently looks like
Front on, my skin doesn’t look too bad, but you can see where I’ve got some scarring – everything you can see in the following photos is scarring and I don’t currently have any active spots and this is 5 days into my new routine.
My left hand side is 100% my worst side and where the worst of my acne breakouts were.
The right hand side is definitely a lot better, so I’m hoping that this won’t take too long to correct.
In the last few days I’ve noticed a HUGE improvement to my skin – I haven’t had any breakouts (big or small), my scarring isn’t showing through my foundation as much and I’m not getting dry flakes from where spots have been healing!
I’m feeling really optimistic about this and am loving how much better my skin is looking already!
Let me know if you’ve got any recommendations in the comments and I’ll make sure to keep checking back with progress updates!
